HOW COVID-19 TESTS WORK?

INCUBATION 1
When you first become infected with COVID-19, the virus enters your body.
You may start to show symptoms in the following week. The time between getting infected
with the virus and the moment when you get the first symptoms is called the incubation period.

In the first few weeks, the virus multiplies in your body and
you can get symptoms of COVID-19. You are now in the infection phase.

A few weeks after you get COVID-19, your body will enter a third
phase, in which it produces an immune response to fight the virus.

To detect the COVID-19 virus, you will be given a viral RNA test. These are often molecular

Antigen tests are specifically designed to detect COVID-19 antigens. For these tests
usually used a cotton swab to take a sample from your nose or throat.

ANTIBODY TEST

Antibody tests are also called immunoassay or serology tests. Become antibodies

DETECTABILITY

TIME A: IMMEDIATELY AFTER EXPOSURE
Imagine you've been in contact with someone who has COVID-19.
You could get yourself tested right away, at time point A.

TIME A: DETECTION IS UNLIKELY
At time point A, it is unlikely that a test will be positive, even if you have COVID-19,
because you are in the incubation period. The virus, antigen and antibodies are
not yet risen enough to be detectable.

TIME B: DURING THE INFECTION
If you are tested for time point B, soon after you develop symptoms
you probably have a viral RNA or antigen test, since both are now in your
body are multiplying.

VIRUS INTRODUCES ANTIBODY

TIME B: VIRUS / ANTIGEN LIKELY POSITIVE
At time point B, a viral RNA or antigen test will likely be positive. But now if you have one
antibody test, it will likely be negative because there are no antibodies yet
created. You may have heard this called "false negative"
