Description: The research-grade biosimilar is a humanized IgG1 kappa monoclonal antibody that acts as an antagonist for IL-5. IL-5 is a major cytokine that plays an important role in the recruitment, activation, growth, differentiation, and survival of eosinophil cells. The antibody binds to IL-5 and inhibits its interaction with the IL-5 receptor, localized on the surface of eosinophil cells. This prevents IL-5 mediated signaling and results in reduced survival of eosinophil cells and reduced inflammation. The original drug received approval from the FDA in 2015 for the treatment of severe eosinophilic asthma.
