Description: The research-grade biosimilar is a humanized monoclonal antibody that targets CD4. CD4 is a primary receptor for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1). HIV-1 enters target cells by binding to CD4 via envelope glycoprotein (gp120). As a result, the CD4/gp120 complex enables the binding of gp120 to another cell receptor CCR5 or CXCR4. This interaction allows gp41 mediated fusion of viral envelope with the target cell membrane. The monoclonal antibody does inhibit the interaction of gp120 with CD4; it binds to an epitope located in domain 2 of the extracellular portion of CD4. This binding induces a conformational change and prevents the binding of gp120 with CCR5 or CXCR4. The antibody belongs to the sub-class of HIV drugs called entry inhibitors or post attachment inhibitors. The original monoclonal antibody is approved by the FDA either alone or in combination with other antiretroviral drugs to treat patients with multi-drug resistance to HIV-1
