Description: The research-grade biosimilar is a recombinant human IgG1 monoclonal antibody that targets interferon-gamma (IFN-γ). Interferon-gamma is a cytokine secreted by immune cells such as natural killer (NK), natural killer T (NKT) cells, and cytotoxic T-lymphocyte cells in response to pathogen attack. It can directly inhibit viral replication and also stimulate and regulate inflammation. Increased inflammation or autoimmune diseases such as arthritis, lupus, and primary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) cause abnormally high levels of interferon-gamma. The original monoclonal antibody non-competitively binds to interferon-gamma and prevents its association with interferon receptors located on the cell surface, and ultimately causing inactivation of pro-inflammatory signaling pathways. The original monoclonal antibody received FDA approval to treat adult and pediatric patients suffering from primary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) and intolerant to HLH therapy.
